According to the CDC, ADHD now affects 11 percent of kids, which is a 42 percent increase over just the last eight years alone. About 6 percent of kids now are taking medication for ADHD
The Functional Medicine approach is a holistic system that doesn’t simply cover up symptoms, but first looks for root causes to treat. It may use medication where appropriate, but only in conjunction with evaluating and treating the root causes of body imbalances which could be contributing to ADHD-like behaviors.
Dr. Mark Hyman, a Functional Medicine practitioner, has said:
“Attention deficit disorder (ADD), today referred to as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is not a Ritalin deficiency, yet the use of these drugs is skyrocketing. The cause of all these problems lay in the dietary and environmental pollutants that throw the seven underlying systems in our body out of balance.”
This quote from Dr. James Greenblatt summarizes it perfectly; “ADHD is not a behavior or discipline problem. ADHD is a medical disorder, in which genetic, neurological, nutritional and environmental factors imbalance the brain, causing imbalanced behavior.”
ADHD is now firmly established as a genetic, neurological, nutritional and environmental disorder- an imbalanced brain results in imbalanced behavior
Symptoms of ADHD include but are not limited to:
Stimulant medications are most commonly prescribed to treat the symptoms of ADHD. These include Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta, Vyvanse, etc. Their mechanism of action is to increase specific neurotransmitters in the brain to help with the imbalance.
While these prescription drugs can often mitigate symptoms, they also cause many unwanted side effects such as decreased appetite, sleep disturbances, stomach pain, irritability, anger, hypertension, growth suppression and headaches. These medications often cause magnesium deficiency as well which can lead to further ADHD symptoms.
Medication helps eliminate or reduce ADHD symptoms, but does not treat the problems causing those symptoms.
There are many factors that contribute to ADHD. Nutritional deficiencies, heavy metal toxicity, yeast/bacterial overgrowth, genetics, environmental toxins, neurotransmitted imbalance and gut imbalance are some of the more prominent things that cause ADHD Symptoms.

Putting my son on ADHD Medication was one of the hardest days of my life. I felt caught between a rock and a hard place. Every time I gave him his medicine, I had a pit in my stomach, but I wasn’t told there were any other options. The side effects were making things even worse. As a Doctor of Pharmacy, I knew we were only masking the symptoms. We needed to find the problem and fix the problem.
After discovering a functional approach to help him minimize and eventually stopping his medications, I went on to get certified as a practitioner in functional health so I could help other parents, and adults, find a better path forward. Sure, we still have our ups and downs and bumps in the road, but I can feel confident I’m doing everything possible to help him achieve optimal long-term health.
Each person’s journey with ADHD is personal and its my goal to walk alongside each client and create the best path forward for their unique situation. Whether you are looking to manage or minimize medication side effects, or are hoping to get off your prescriptions in the future. I’ll work with your provider to help you chart the best path forward.
